We all get into reading ruts. This summer, why not venture into the brave new world of literary otherness?
How many different genres have you tried? The collections of the Goffstown Public Library have a little something for everyone, as reflected in the lists below. Overly fond of fiction? Try a biography (even though you probably already know how it ends). Never read a graphic novel? Give one a gander. Aren't westerns just a different kind of historical fiction? Don't have much time for reading? Give poetry or short stories a try. Throw away whatever prejudices or preconceived notions you may have about genres you haven't picked up lately -- you might be pleasantly surprised!
It's time to unlock your creativity and get crafty!
Whether you are an emerging artist, old master, or somewhere in between, making something with your hands can provide a satisfaction little else can. The Goffstown Public Library encourages imagination and creativity in adults with craft classes, reading lists, and online resources; check them out today to complete this mission.
Commit to making this summer the season in which you get your story out of your head and onto paper (or into bits and bytes!).
Not sure where to start? We've compiled a reading list and numerous challenges in the activities below to help you begin. Whether you believe there are only 7 Basic Plots in all of literature, or that the themes of storytelling are better encapsulated by Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations, or you gravitate more to the far more simple Rule of Threes, you are the only person who can tell your unique stories.
Dig into your family's past: a series of stories which culminate in the present of your own.
We are all tied to people who lived at every stage of human history, yet very few among us know the story of more than one or two generations who proceeded us. This mission is designed to help you uncover those stories and ramp up your imagining of who you are, and where you came from.
The growing season is short, but the learning curve can be lifelong.
If you're interested in growing your gardening skills, we've got you covered. Use the Goffstown Public Library's collections, connections, and classes for information and inspiration in the garden to complete this mission.
Nature is more than 'out there'; it's right in your backyard!
There's no need to travel to far flung locations to experience nature. You can encounter the natural world right out your window if you know how to look. This mission guides your focus towards your immediate environs with an emphasis on what there is to see, how best to see it, and how to make your world more inviting to New Hampshire's many and intriguing critters and creepers.
This summer, bask in the alluring glow of the Silver Screen!
Movies have been an important part of both the pop culture and public library landscapes ever since VHS technology in the 80's made it possible to have a movie night at home. Streaming technology has made it easier that ever to be a film connoisseur! You can get your movie fix from the Goffstown Public Library by checking out our DVDs or accessing our streaming platform Hoopla.
What's up with the night sky?
Summer's warmer, longer days invite us to linger a little longer outside; the heat indoors, so marvelous in winter, is far less alluring come July. This mission provides you with the perfect mind-expanding excuse to loiter out-of-doors: take the time to breathe deep, look up, and learn all you can about the stars.
No need for faraway destinations when scenic New Hampshire is your home.
New Hampshire has beautiful mountains, beaches, cities, and forests just waiting for you to explore. Whether you're new to the 603 or have never left, there is still something for you to discover about the Granite State. To complete this mission, undertake any three of the five activities below, exploring what Goffstown and New Hampshire have to offer during your summer holiday.
Let's run it back now, y'all - it's time for a literary remix!
Some books are so good that even when you're done, you don't want to let go. There are characters, stories and situations whose power sparks your own creativity, causing you to carry them with you beyond that last page and last chapter. This mission is all about re-imagining someone else's story, extending the magic that delighted you, while bringing your own unique talents to bear.
